Like previous years, shopping centres in Dhaka are flooded with Indian clothing this Eid.

Many of the gorgeous dresses have been named after Indian film and television stars, with the most expensive one named after Sunny Leone, the Indo-Canadian porn star-turned-Bollywood actress.

Shop-owners said Sunny Leone dress prices ranged from Tk 15,000 to Tk 52,000, depending on designs and fabrics.

Owner of Lasima Fashions at Bashundhara City Shopping Complex Mehdi Hassan told that Indian three-pieces named Sunny Leone, Khowab, Mughal-e-Azam, Ashiqui-2, Ranjhana, Bipasha, Aksara, Esha Deol, Kanpuri and Ayesha Takia have hit this year’s Eid market.

Khowab was being sold at Tk 7,000-20,000, Esha Deol Tk 9,000-16,000, Bipasha 7,000-9,500 and others at 7,000-15,000, shop-owners said.

They said, though they already put a large number of new garments on sale, the rush of buyers was still low.

Mehdi said: “The sale situation is worse this year than last year’s. The market is yet to pick up. Number of visitors is larger than that of buyers.”

Owner of Dhansiri Fashions, Motaleb Hossain, held political unrest ‘partially responsible’ for lukewarm buyers’ response.

He said: “Usually we start putting Eid products on sale before Ramadan begins. Dresses reach (the shops) before Ramadan. But this year didn’t arrive in time because of 4-5-day shutdowns in a row.”

“That’s why we’re late in arranging everything. It’ll be difficult (for us) to make up the losses.”

Apart from three-pieces, Lehengas have good demand this Eid.

Owner of Suborna Fashions at Gausia Market Nurul Haq said Lehengas were being sold between Tk 2,500 and Tk 8,000.

In Gausia and New Market, three-pieces are on sale at Tk 4,000-9,000.

Though Indian dresses are the favourite choice of customers, three-pieces made of local cotton fabrics have also found a good market.

Owner of Tinni’s Fashions at Bashundhara City Ziauddin said cotton three-pieces were being sold between Tk 4,000 and Tk 12,000.

Customers dissatisfied

Buyers said garment prices are higher this year compared to last year’s.

Kahkashe Iffat, a private university student, told “The dresses I bought last year at Tk 6,000 are being sold at Tk 10,500.”
